Don't Fear the Holy Ghost

Holy Ghost! did a pretty cool remix of the new Van She cover of Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper. Unlike the original, which has a lot of layered synth sounds, the Holy Ghost version is pretty minimal. This is what Alex from Holy Ghost had to say about it on Myspace.

While we were on tour last spring we got asked to do a remix of Van She's cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper." (A remix of a cover, how post-modern.) The deadline was really tight though, so the only way we could do it is if we rented a studio in Paris and worked there for the 5 days we had off. Luckily, we found a place we could work on such short notice.

We didn't have ANY of our usual gear with us (let alone our hard drive!), so we built this thing on foreign equipment: old ludwig kit, roland jupiter 6, fender bass, roland sbf 325 stereo flanger, percussion, old upright piano, and of course, a space echo.

In the end it worked out....I think.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to see a show by The D.A. From Elpaso Texas. They're a five part band that includes keys, bass, guitar, drums, and most notably a trumpet player that uses all sorts of weird effects. They've got a great sound, and great lyrics that give the sonic landscapes they create some substance. They just got done with a midwest tour. They recorded their newest E.P. at a little place called the Sonic Ranch. When I say little Im joking, because it's probably the largest recording complex in the United States. The lucky bastards were able to record on the same Neve console that Motown records and later, Madonna used. Check out their E.P! It's a pretty awesome Post Punk/Dance Rock record, and I haven't stopped listening to it. They have been gracious enough to post the entire E.P. for our readers to download!

The nameless duo Neon Indian has released a new track! This stuff definitely falls under the newly coined term "Dream Wave" that's being thrown around a lot lately. I got great feedback on the last tracks I posted from them, and I think this track is even better. This one is a little more polished and upbeat than the tracks from the previous post. It's most likely the single on their soon to be released EP. If we had a ratings system, Id give this one 4.9999 out of 5 robots.

SXSW recap: I made the mistake of going to see way too many Djs this year at SXSW. I heard everyone play pretty much the same set over and over. It was lackluster and disappointing. The live acts I did see were awful. Kanye sucked! His "Good Music" showcase was pretty lame. Seeing Dead Prez's surprise guest performance beforehand was way better, but they got fucked in to being stuck on the DJ stage. The good live acts I did see were Kap10kurt, Codebreaker, Vega, the Twelves, Quaff, and We Have Band. We Have Band was by far the most entertaining. Everything about them is just right. They're a three part group that look as good as they play. I expect that they will blow up in the near future. Here is their cover of The Pet Shop Boys' West End Girls.

YACHT) is playing in Norman this Wednesday!! (3/18) and in Dallas Sunday (3/22)! If you are in town, you MUST go to this show. Yacht is an amazing band, and amazing bands do not pass through Norman very often. Be there, or be sorry.

YACHT was formed in 2002 as Y.A.C.H.T., "Young Americans Challenging High Technology." The current incarnation began gestating in 2008, and at this point bears no resemblance, except biologically, to the previous versions. The YACHT of 2009 is the true form of YACHT.

The 2009 form of YACHT is highly indebted to the Mystery Lights of the Far West Texas desert, where most of the new YACHT album, SEE MYSTERY LIGHTS, was written and recorded.

Strictly speaking, YACHT does "perform music." YACHT provides inspiring Teachings of constantly changing elements: PowerPoint presentations, immersive audio, live audience audits, and shamanistic video environments. The YACHT Performance is expressly designed to provide groups of people with catharsis and purification.

Avian X isn't exactly the greatest thing in the world. Fact of the matter is, if I heard her on MTV or something, I'd turn down the volume a whole lot. She's hot though, so I'd watch her dance. Designer Drugss does an amazing job remixing this track. They are able to take this blah pop track and turn it into a pretty good dance track! I dont know how they do it, but these guys are damn talented. They roll out amazing tracks ever week it seems. Way to go guys!

I have been wanting to blog about these cool cats Bach & Gina for a while now, and I finally have the chance! These guys should be big right now. Take a listen, and I think you'll agree!

In Barcelona’ is the fresh, brand new sound from 2009 by Bach&Gina. Bach is from the north, Gina is from the South, and both had to wait till 2002 before they could finally meet and eventually collaborate musically together. Though coming from totally different musical backgrounds – the former being a saxophonist interested in dub and jazz, while the latter plays guitar and has rock and pop roots – this unlikely duo was brought together by their common interest for electronica. After a few years of working together, Bach hit the road to Barcelona where he spent a year. It was only when he came back that these two decided to work together on an electro pop album project. These guys seems to take malicious pleasure in challenging musical preconceptions about genres and styles, resulting in what could be described as some kind of ‘harmonic dancefloor’. Fluctuating between electro-rock and new disco beat, their music brings Barcelona straight into your ears, a city famous for its parties where punks, geeks, and bp’s are partying crazy style till dawn. It’s actually hard not to smile and dance when listening to B&G’s sound. With In Barcelona, their debut EP, our two heroes – as they like to be called – aim to drift from private party to private party so as to deliver their catchy sound and share their vision of partying, in which everybody fits.

Sober of The Party, just released one of his few solo mixtapes to us this afternoon. With tracks from Robin Thicke, Dallas’ Erykah Badu and my favorite The Gap Band, Sober throws it back with the old RnB, slowjams and neo soul vibe. Sober is known for being part of the DJ collective Central Booking and The Party who also include DJ Nature and Select. Together they produce Dallas’ hypest monthly parties in Texas called The Party and Hands Up at the Loft in Dallas. They have hosted such guest as Justice, Smif n Wessin, Roxy Cottontail, and Pase Rock to name a few.

The Trouble & Bass crew is mostly known for their in your face aggressive bassline music. However, with the release of the Little Jinder EP Polyhedron, they have taken a turn for the softer side of the spectrum. The production in this EP is awesome, and the vocals are pretty dreamy. My favorite track is I like it causal, but all three that Josephine has sent us are pretty damn amazing. This is a great Pop album. Trouble & Bass had a remix contest for the track Polyhedron which has long since past, but you can still get the parts to the song and the master here.

WZRDZ is a new group composed of Mark Reveley from Meterhead and and Mike Genius. They have an EP coming out in January on Crushed Records. This song is their first release and it's a good one. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit has been remixed quite a few times, but this is the only version besides the original that I have ever liked. Hope you like it to! Prince Klassen is one of my favorite DJs from Texas, and I recently learned he's also quite a good producer too! Klassen started Djing when he was 14! Daaaamn! That isnt even fair. When I was 14, I was still playing with action figures. I feel so inferior. Originally from San Antonio, he now lives in Austin where he holds down a weekly and a monthly. I would describe most of Klassen's edits as funky goodness. He's chopped up everybody from Chromeo to Aretha Franklin, but it all seems to be held together quite well by a fresh disco funk beat. Today Im posting something a little different than the pulsing Electro beats that usually grace this page. It was a bone chilling 19 degrees when I woke up this morning, and it doesn't seem to be getting any warmer. Fortunately, we were sent some tunes from a band called Dignan today. They're perfect listening for a cold day when all you want to do is retreat home to stay warm. Dignan is composed of five friends from Mcallen Texas. They are the product of the two original members spending many a long night staying up in a church writing songs together. Their efforts definitely paid off. Automatic Panic vs Dj Cat NYC Obsession Remix!

Im absolutely in love with the remix I got in the mail today from Automatic Panic! Obsession, the 80's hit by Animotion is an awesome track in it's own right, but the things that Automatic Panic and DJ Cat NYC have done to it are sick. My favorite part is the nasty wobble bass throughout the track. The two leave the best parts of the song relatively intact, and build layers of awesomness on top of it. This will definitely be going in my set tonight, and it should go in yours too. Automatic Panic has been consistently killing it lately. Look back at the last post we featured on him, his Bizarre Love Triangle Remix, if you like this song. Both go on my highly recommended list.

So this band Rainbow Arabia is awesome. My friend Sean from Sydney Confirm and Disqo Disco told me about them. His band is awesome too. There isnt too much about Rainbow Arabia on their Myspace. Automatic Panic remixes New Order

It's tough to remix a track that everybody recognizes like Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order. DRD's favorite remixer/producer/DJ out of San Antonio Texas, Automatic Panic is the latest DJ to attempt a remix of the track, and he definitely does not disappoint. Panic takes what I would consider to be a pretty laid back dance track and transforms it in to a dance floor banger cooked all the way through. Panic does a good job of keeping just enough of the track in the mix that the song is still very recognizable, all while adding some dirty pulsing synths that will really get the crowd going.

Hot Pink Delorean released two certified banger remixes today! They're both pretty awesome, but I really like the Hollywood Holt remix. I saw that dude at a Vice Party in NYC and a dude in a bear costume showed up. I was there to see Holy Ghost, but unfortunately I missed their set. Hollywood Holt didn't dissapoint though. Hot Pink Delorean takes Caked Up and adds some nasty distorted keyboards to the mix. I dont know who the Victorian English Gentleman's Club is, but their name is too damn long to type more than once, so Im not going to say anything about the second track other than it's pretty good too.

As of late, I love pretty much anything with a disco beat. Congas, Disco Bells, etc get my attention pretty quickly. Today I ran across this badass disco remix by VHS or Beta DJs! They've taken a song that was already pretty damn disco, and finished the job. You could probably stick this on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack without it sounding out of place. In this case, that's a good thing. Great job on this track by both the VHS or Beta DJs and Tiger City.

Greetings Robots! Hot Pink Delorean sent me this awesome remix of Mad at You by The Glass yesterday. It starts off slow and murky, and then a couple minutes in, the beat really takes off. Apparently the group got some negative press for the above photo they created for the song. Ill share the email they sent to the blogosphere with you.
“So we were on the cover of the national Macedonian Newspaper 2 days in a row because of the artwork for the single (we scanned a Macedonian Valium package, and so are changing the art) , we were going to do a round of blogging to publicize this hilarious fact but I guess you guys can reach out to your contacts as is with the REMIX”

I realize this layout blows copious amounts of ass.... anyone with some decent design skills want to help me out? Also, it would be cool to have a second contributor to this blog so that it gets updated more often...

There are some really great B-More tracks from the Dance Robots, Dance! crew. You'll recognize the John Bourke track if you go to the Opolis.. it's the track that usually starts the conga line. Clearly Ive been slacking in the blog writing department as of... well... since I started writing blogs on blogger. HOWEVER, a lot has changed for me in the last few months. I have started Djing, Ive been going to a lot more parties, and Ive learned tons more about the music industry in general. I'll be posting things up on a regular basis soon, so get excited.
